German Chancellor Angela Merkel pledges to work until 'last day' to secure Brexit deal

Chancellor Angela Merkel said her administration will operate before the”last day” to ensure an orderly UK departure from the European Union but insisted Germany is prepared for a no-deal Brexit.

The German leader opened a 34 second budget speech in the lower house of parliament, or Bundestag, bemoaning the departure of one of the EU’s”most important member countries” in the coming months, with an Oct. 31 deadline looming.

“I am firmly convinced as before that we have every chance to do it in an orderly manner — and the German authorities will work until the previous day to make certain that that’s possible,” Merkel told lawmakers on Wednesday. “But I could also say that we are ready for a disorderly departure.”

Prime Minister Boris Johnson, in office for less than two weeks, was cornered this week by Parliament, which resisted the possibility of leaving the EU with no deal, triggering economic upheaval, even after he said he’d rather”die in a ditch” than delay Brexit past an October 31 deadline.
